His recent writing on AI and school leadership (Fullan et al., 2023) makes him the ideal voice to situate this book at the intersection of change management and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. A foreword from Fullan would signal to the field that this book builds on and extends the most respected change leadership scholarship of the past three decades.
  • Dr. Muhammad Khalifa -- Professor of Educational Leadership at The Ohio State University; author of Culturally Responsive School Leadership (Harvard Education Press). Khalifa's CRSL framework is extended in Chapter 9 of this book to address AI adoption through a racial equity lens -- a connection no other scholar has made. A foreword from Khalifa would affirm the book's CRT grounding and signal to CRSL practitioners that AI leadership is an equity issue, not a technology issue.
  • Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond -- President of the California State Board of Education and President Emerita of the Learning Policy Institute; former adviser to multiple U.S. presidents on education policy. Darling-Hammond's scholarship on the factory model of schooling and the flat world of education is cited throughout the book's opening chapters. Her policy influence and national visibility would give the book credibility with both practitioners and policymakers, and her endorsement would position the Shared Vision Framework as policy-relevant, not merely theoretical.

    I remember the exact moment the question crystallized.

    It was 2015, and I was standing in a Makerspace classroom in Abu Dhabi, watching twelve-year-olds from a dozen nations -- Emirati, Indian, Filipino, Egyptian, Korean, British, Pakistani, Sudanese, American -- huddle around a table, arguing over the design of a solar-powered water filtration system. The argument was beautiful. One girl was sketching a prototype on a whiteboard. A boy was pulling up research on an iPad, cross-referencing NASA data with a YouTube tutorial from a university in Kenya. Two students who did not share a first language were communicating through diagrams and hand gestures, building something neither could have built alone. Their teacher stood at the edge of the room, watching, listening, intervening only when the group hit a genuine impasse. The room was loud. It was messy. It was alive.

    Three months later, I was back in the United States, visiting a school in Southern California. The building was newer than the Abu Dhabi school. The technology budget was larger. And the students sat in rows, silent, filling in bubbles on a standardized assessment while a timer counted down on the projector screen. The teacher sat at her desk, monitoring for cheating. The room was quiet. It was orderly. And something in it was dead.

    I stood in the hallway between those two classrooms -- figuratively, at first, and then literally for the next seven years of my career -- and asked the question that would not leave me alone: Why does the richest, most technologically advanced nation on earth still educate its children as if we are preparing them for the factory floor?

    That question drove me through a career that, looking back, reads like a winding path but was always circling the same center. I started as a substitute teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, where I learned that the system was not broken -- it was built. Built to sort, to track, to produce compliance. I taught kindergarten for four years and fell in love with the way five-year-olds approach the world: with questions, with wonder, with a stubborn refusal to accept that the answer on the worksheet is the only answer that matters. I moved to Abu Dhabi, where I taught and then led, and where I saw what happens when you design schools around inquiry instead of around testing. I came back to the States and worked as an instructional designer at Microsoft, where I learned that the private sector had long ago abandoned the factory model for its own workforce development -- even as it sold products to schools that reinforced it. I designed training for the United States Army, where I discovered that the military, of all institutions, was more willing to innovate its learning models than most school districts. I trained teachers at UC Fullerton. And through all of it, the question kept circling.

    Then I found my way to the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education, where my doctoral committee -- Dr. David Cash, Dr. Kathy Krop, and Dr. Briana Hinga -- challenged me to stop asking the question in the abstract and start answering it with evidence. What I found changed everything I thought I knew.

    I studied a superintendent -- I call his district "Innovation USD" in the research -- who was doing what most education leaders only talk about. He was an African American man, a Ugandan refugee who had barely spoken English when he arrived in the United States, who had risen through the system and then decided to change it from the inside. He did not just write a strategic plan about equity and innovation. He built a team of what I came to call "positive deviants" -- leaders with experience outside education who brought divergent thinking into a system designed for convergence. He treated the entire organizational change process as an inquiry-based learning project, the same pedagogy he wanted to see in classrooms. He named the students who were being failed -- by name, by race, by specific population -- when everyone around him preferred the safety of generic language about "all students." He built relationships with the community so deep that they passed two bond measures at 72 percent approval, totaling nearly $700 million. And he centered the voices of students and families at every stage, creating reflective cycles that kept the work honest.

    From that research, I developed the Shared Vision Framework for the Fourth Industrial Superintendent -- a cyclical model grounded in Bruce Sinclair's construct of how technology impacts marginalized communities, extended through Critical Race Theory, and designed specifically for K-12 district leaders navigating the intersection of equity and technological transformation. That framework, born from a dissertation defended at USC Rossier in December 2022, is the backbone of this book.

    But this book is not a dissertation. The dissertation was written for a committee of three. This book is written for the tens of thousands of superintendents, aspiring superintendents, school board members, district leadership teams, and education leadership faculty who are right now standing in that hallway between two classrooms -- the one built for the past and the one their students deserve -- wondering how to walk through the door.

    Who This Book Is For

    This book is for sitting superintendents who know the system needs to change but need a framework, not another inspirational keynote. It is for aspiring superintendents in doctoral programs who want to lead differently than they were trained. It is for school board members who are being asked to approve AI policies they do not fully understand and who need a grounding in what equitable technology adoption actually requires. It is for district leadership teams -- assistant superintendents, directors of instruction, chief technology officers, equity officers -- who are doing the daily work of transformation and need tools, not just theory. And it is for the education leadership faculty who are preparing the next generation of superintendents: the field cannot continue to produce leaders equipped for the Second Industrial Revolution and expect them to lead in the Fourth.

    How to Use This Book

    The book is organized in four parts that mirror the journey of transformation:

    Part I: WHY (Chapters 1-4) builds the case for urgency. It traces the racialized history of industrialized schooling, presents the workforce data that makes transformation a moral imperative, surveys the current state of AI in American schools, and examines what the rest of the world is doing while we debate.

    Part II: WHAT (Chapters 5-8) introduces the model. It presents the Shared Vision Framework in full, then devotes a chapter to each of its core components: moral purpose and the positive deviant leader, change as an inquiry-based project, and relationships as infrastructure.

    Part III: HOW (Chapters 9-13) gets into the implementation. These chapters cover the equity imperative in AI adoption, the pedagogy-first principle (why IBL must precede technology), assessment beyond standardized testing, redesigning district infrastructure, and building the reflective cycles that keep the work accountable to students and families.

    Part IV: NOW WHAT (Chapters 14-15) issues the call. Chapter 14 presents three extended district portraits showing how the framework adapts to different contexts -- affluent suburban, urban high-poverty, and rural low-resource. Chapter 15 is a letter to the next superintendent, synthesizing the framework into a personal call to action.

    Every chapter includes discussion questions for leadership teams and book study groups, a practitioner tool designed for immediate use, and figures that translate research into visual frameworks you can share with your cabinet, your board, and your community. Appendix B provides a complete index of all practitioner tools. Appendix C offers a 15-session discussion guide for superintendent academies and ed leadership courses.

    You do not have to read this book front to back. If you need the moral case first, start with Part I. If you already feel the urgency and want the model, start with Chapter 5. If you are mid-implementation and need specific tools, go directly to Part III. If you are a professor designing a course, start with Appendix C and work backward. The framework is cyclical by design. Enter where you are.

    A Note on Terminology

    I use "Fourth Industrial Revolution" deliberately throughout this book, rather than the more common "21st century learning." We are twenty-six years into the 21st century, and "21st century skills" has become a phrase that means everything and therefore means nothing. The Fourth Industrial Revolution -- a term coined by Klaus Schwab to describe the fusion of physical, digital, and biological technologies -- is specific, measurable, and urgent. It names something the education system has not yet named: we are not preparing students for a slightly better version of the present. We are preparing them for a fundamentally different future, one that is arriving faster than any prior transformation in human history. The language matters because the language shapes the urgency.

    A Note on AI in This Book

    There is an irony I want to name directly. This book is about how superintendents should lead their districts through the AI revolution, and it was written during the AI revolution, using AI tools as part of the research, synthesis, and drafting process. I used AI to search databases, synthesize research across hundreds of sources, and generate early drafts that I then revised extensively through my own expertise and voice. I name this in the spirit of the transparency I ask of the superintendents reading this book: if we expect our students and teachers to navigate AI with integrity, we must model that navigation ourselves. Every claim in this book is grounded in cited research. Every argument is mine. The tools helped me work faster. The thinking is my own.

    A Note on Who Is Writing

    I am a Black woman who has spent her career in education and technology. I have taught kindergartners and trained soldiers. I have designed curricula for Microsoft and built eLearning for the Department of Defense. I hold an Ed.L. from USC Rossier and certifications in everything from project-based learning to school administration. I am the CEO of Alexandria's Design, an instructional design firm, and I have seen from every angle -- classroom, corporate, military, university -- how the factory model persists and who it hurts most.

    The field of education technology leadership is dominated by white male voices. That is not a complaint; it is a data point. The perspectives in this book -- grounded in Critical Race Theory, centered on the experiences of communities of color, informed by a career that spans the Global South and the American schoolhouse -- are perspectives the field needs but rarely hears. I wrote this book because the Fourth Industrial Revolution demands diverse leadership, and the scholarship should reflect the diversity of the leaders it seeks to develop.

    This book exists because a superintendent in Southern California had the moral purpose to name inequity by name, the courage to hire people who thought differently, and the patience to build something that would outlast his tenure. It exists because five district leaders sat across from me during interviews and shared not just their strategies but their tears, their frustrations, and their hopes. It exists because my doctoral committee believed that a qualitative case study of one district could reveal universal truths about leadership, equity, and change. And it exists because somewhere right now, a superintendent is standing in a hallway between two classrooms, looking for a way forward.

    This book is the way forward. Let us walk through the door.
